Due to the lack of bees, farmers receive less than 10% of the yield of sunflower
Agroholding MHP receives less than UAH 400 million annually from the lack of bee colonies for pollination of entomophilous crops. This figure was voiced by Andriy Yurchenko, specialist of the department of land and property relations of MHP in the article "Face to Ukrainian beekeeping – what was discussed at the UBTA round table" on Kurkul.com.
“As the practice of bee pollination in the company's fields shows, pollination by bees gives at least 10% increase in the yield of sunflower and rapeseed, and also increases the germination and oil content of seeds. In particular, in sunflower the increase in oil content is 4-5%, and in rape seeds it can reach 10%,” explained Andriy Yurchenko.
According to him, attracting apiaries for pollination is the most agricultural activity in the conditions of an agricultural holding, which, along with cultivation technology and weather conditions, is one of the three components of high yields.
Also, according to him, cooperation between agricultural producers and beekeepers can have a social aspect:
the ability to organize local communities around beekeeping;
creation of a honey conveyor for bees;
exploitation of slopes and disagreements for crops and planting of melliferous crops;
project for the development of the territories of OTG based on beekeeping.
“The basis for understanding beekeepers and farmers should be a mutual dialogue and a broad information campaign, the specialist is convinced. Only when agronomists understand that their results in the field and financial performance at the end of the year will depend, among other things, on the presence of bees on pollination, and beekeepers start working in close contact with local agricultural producers and jointly develop schemes for protecting bees and plants, then the market for bee pollination will begin grow and give results,” added Andriy Yurchenko.
