"Karat Plus" in the Dnipropetrovsk region prefers winter peas

Peas are the best predecessor for wheat, especially peas for winter sowing, which have been grown in Karat Plus JLLC for three years already.

The chief agronomist of the company Yuriy Pilnik spoke about this in an interview with The Ukrainian Farmer magazine.

“Why did you choose winter peas? Because its yield is higher than the spring one, because the winter one has a longer growing season, which is key for the formation of the crop, ”the specialist explained.

In addition, spring peas fall under summer drought, high temperatures, and winter peas withstand this critical period more easily, because at the moment they have a better-developed root system and a large vegetative mass.

“For three years we have not received less than 2.5-3.7 t / ha, and in other farms, spring crops give birth to no more than 2.5 t / ha,” noted Yuri Pilnik.

According to the chief agronomist, the technology of growing peas for winter sowing is the same as for ordinary sowing, it is only important to observe the sowing time - no later than October 5, so that it does not outgrow before entering winter.

However, if at the moment there is no moisture in the soil, then there is no point in sowing peas. As for overwintering, everything is fine: now the winters are not too cold, so peas can withstand low temperatures well, withstand even short-term frosts down to –12… –13 degrees on bare ground, and even up to –20 degrees under snow.

Recall that in the South, due to the weather, the agrarians have partially lost the harvest of peas.
