In the Volyn region began to find GMOs by PCR in real time
Volyn Regional Phytosanitary Laboratory has expanded its scope of activities. The specialists of the institution are examining 23 agricultural crops, in particular, soybeans, rapeseed, corn, wheat, potatoes, sugar beets for the presence of GMOs in them using the real-time polymerase chain reaction.
This was reported by the press service of the State Department of State Food Service in the Volyn region.
Laboratory director Evgenia Likhach noted that testing for the presence of GMOs is not a whim, but a requirement of the time. Currently, studies of genetically modified foods have not led to an unambiguous assessment of their impact on the human body and the environment.
For safety, a number of European Union countries have completely banned the use of transgenic products for food purposes or introduced mandatory labeling for the presence of GMOs.
In Ukraine, the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 468 “On Approval of the Procedure for Labeling Food Products Containing Genetically Modified Organisms or Produced with Their Use and Introduced into Circulation” is in force, according to which food products containing GMOs in an amount of more than 0.9% must be marked accordingly, that is, have information about it on the label.
“For producers, importers and exporters of grain crops, GMO testing is essential. Therefore, we decided to open a department for molecular genetic research of products of plant origin in the Volyn regional phytosanitary laboratory,” the department noted.
