A farmer from the Zaporozhye region, Ivan Zakharenko, has bred his own variety of garlic - "Lyubasha". This garlic has high yields. The advantages of the variety were also appreciated by farmers from other countries.

“Today there is no better variety of garlic that could compete with our Lyubasha variety; it has confidently occupied its niche in the market. I state this with full responsibility. The minimum yield of Lyubasha garlic per hectare is 8 tons. The maximum amount in the Baltics harvested is 23 tons per hectare. Nobody else has been able to repeat such a success with us, ”says Ivan Zakharenko.

The farmer from the village of Pokrovskoye himself grows 8 hectares of garlic. He uses a mechanical method of planting garlic and encourages other small farmers to move away from manual production, according to the Ukrainian Horticultural Business Development Project UHBDP.

In addition to garlic, Ivan Zakharenko grows 5 hectares of table grapes, receiving 10 kilograms from a bush. The farmer's favorite variety is Arcadia.

Now the price range for garlic in Ukraine is quite wide. Wholesale prices range from 35 to 85 UAH per kilogram. Planting time for garlic depends on weather conditions. This is usually between mid-September and mid-October. The best conditions for planting garlic are when the temperature of the topsoil is between 10 and 12 degrees Celsius. Chives for the winter are planted at a distance of 10 centimeters from each other. The depth can vary from 6 to 10 centimeters - it all depends on the type of soil in the field.
