The rise in popularity of animal protection movements and the “ecological” lifestyle has also influenced the fashion for clothes, shoes and accessories. In particular, the popularity of fur and leather substitutes is increasing.

For example, in the Philippines, material for shoes is made from pineapples, and in Spain they created eco-leather from persimmons, according to SEEDS.

PersiSKIN is Spain's first vegan leather substitute. It is manufactured by Laserfood. The basis for eco-leather was fruit - persimmon. All components of the new material are 100% natural. The development and patenting of a substitute cost the manufacturer 500,000 euros.

Mass production of persimmon eco-leather will begin in May this year. The company plans to invest another 2 million euros in the project, writes Agri-Gator.

Earlier, the Philippine company Dole, together with the British startup Ananas Anam, began to produce shoes and accessories from pineapples. This leather substitute was named Piñatex. It is already used to make sneakers by such well-known brands as Nike, Hugo Boss, H&M and others. Piñatex is made from pineapple leaves that have been fiberized and dried. Then the fibers form a mesh, which is the basis for an environmentally friendly fabric.

In the production of 1 square meter of fabric from pineapple, 8 kilograms of CO2 is emitted less than in the manufacture of raw materials for tailoring from materials of animal origin.
