The farmer advised which strawberry planting material to use

Planting material

Farm "Rayskaya yagoda" in the village of Rayskoe in the Kherson region uses both its own planting material and purchases from European nurseries. The first is better to control, it is cheaper and always at hand, the second is innovative and virus-free.

Vladimir Gladarev, the founder of the Paradise Berry Farm, told the Plantator magazine about this.

He noted that the planting material for garden strawberries is partially purchased on the farm, and partially grown independently. The advantage of own seedlings is that their quality can be better controlled.

Mr. Vladimir also highly recommends frigo, a certified planting material for garden strawberries, supplied from leading European nurseries. These are pure virus-free seedlings of guaranteed quality and good potential. One should acquire such elite material, he says, and then propagate it for oneself.

Given the warming of the climate in recent years, strawberries of garden varieties of May fruiting (short daylight hours) are planted on the farm from August to September. Before the onset of cold weather, seedlings have time to take root, divide into horns and lay flower stalks.

They prefer cassette seedlings, because frigos cannot always be found during this period, and planting with a kopanka due to heat and air drought does not justify itself. As for remontant varieties, they can be planted under Paradise conditions from March, as soon as the soil thaws, and up to and including September. Here they even had the experience of planting in October: the seedlings did not freeze and overwintered well under agrofiber. In early spring and autumn, a kopanka takes root well; in another period, seedlings in cassettes are used.
