The main criteria for choosing corn hybrids under climate change are named
With rising temperatures and critical climate changes, farmers need to be careful when choosing corn hybrids in order to achieve consistently high yields. According to the speaker of the new large-scale course "Queen of the Fields" Anatoly Grigorchuk, the important selection criteria are the plasticity of the hybrid, the sowing quality of seeds, the energy and germination of seeds, resistance to diseases and external factors. According to a study by Anatoly Grigorchuk, for 6-7 years, corn hybrids form the same yield regardless of FAO. Therefore, in the selection of seeds on the farm, the first criterion is used - plasticity.
“In our zone, the average yield is about 8.5 t / ha. This indicator is due to moisture availability. Conducting research with different hybrids, we came to the following conclusion - within 6-7 years there is no difference in yield between late and early hybrids. Recently, when the weather conditions have changed and the temperature regime has become rather unfavorable for the development of corn, the plasticity of the hybrid has become the main selection criterion, ”the farmer noted.
Also, according to him, special attention should be paid to the energy and germination of seeds (the difference between them should be minimal).
“Genetic purity is also an important indicator. World companies supply seeds with 95% genetic purity, ”said the expert.
As the speaker noted, it is worth paying attention to the mass of a thousand seeds, which for corn should be no more than 300.
“Regarding the calibration of seeds, there are times when the seeds are poorly calibrated and with the available fractions. This is a purely technical problem and cannot be traced back. So, when you have received the seeds, it is worth opening the bag and looking at the quality. In order not to buy a "pig in a poke", - added Anatoly Grigorchuk.
Also, according to the advice of an expert, it is important to choose hybrids that are resistant to diseases and external factors:
- disease resistance is of great importance when choosing a hybrid due to the spread of helminthosporiosis and bladder soot;
- climate aridization entails the use of hybrids with high drought tolerance;
- siliceous hybrids are the most resistant to cold weather.
