Due to insufficient rainfall in the South of Ukraine, farmers are advised to replace often drying corn and sunflowers with almond plantations. Vasily Babansky, Vice-President of the All-Ukrainian Nut Association, told about this in the article “Everyone who is interested in growing almonds is people under 35 years old” on Kurkul.com.
“For example, over the past 20 years, the profitability of grain production in the Odessa region has significantly decreased. If 20 years ago it was about 48-50%, today it is 20-22%, and in some years we almost completely lose grain crops,” says Vasily Babansky.
In this regard, the walnut association, together with climate scientists, soil scientists, microbiologists, has developed a number of promising alternative directions for the development of agribusiness, one of which is almond farming.
“The production and development of almond orchards in the South of Ukraine has its justification. One of the root causes is economic. Today, unfortunately, the production of such crops as grapes and peach has become absolutely unprofitable here. Secondly, almonds are a very drought-resistant plant with a high economic effect,” said a representative of the Ukrainian Nut Association.
