Price forecast for raspberries in 2022 announced

Trade, investment

In 2021, raspberry prices in Ukraine increased to a record level. In summer, in some places they were even higher than blueberry quotes. In 2022, experts also predict high prices for berries. This is stated in the message of the Ukrainian Fruit and Vegetable Association (UPOA).

As experts noted, last year there was also a revival in the construction of enterprises for freezing berries. All these factors contributed to the development of the direction.

“The export of raspberries will grow, but the production of berries this year will not increase significantly. Indeed, against the backdrop of high prices, new plantations are being laid, but they will not have time to reach sufficient yields, so a significant increase in production is possible as early as 2023,” said UPAA President Taras Bashtannik.

According to him, this year the price of raspberries will be high.

"It may not be as high as last season - 25-30% lower, but still significantly higher than over several previous years," added Taras Bashtannik.‎

However, according to Andriy Yarmak, an economist at the Investment Department of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), due to a noticeable revival of producers' interest in raspberries, prices for raspberries will decrease.

“Export of frozen raspberries, I think, will grow. However, it is necessary to consider the export of raspberries not in years, but in seasons. Therefore, in quantitative terms, in the 2022/23 season, raspberry exports will increase, but in terms of value, I am almost sure that they will fall. That is, the industry will experience a price shock - raspberry prices will fall faster than most in the market think. After all, consumption in the world fell as a result of a sharp rise in prices. And production will skyrocket everywhere. Again, provided that there are no weather disasters, ”said the FAO economist.

As Alexander Yareshchenko, Deputy Director for Research at the Institute of Horticulture of the National Academy of Sciences, noted, it is far from certain that the trend of high prices for raspberries will continue in 2022.

“Of course, quotes will not fall rapidly, but the price, most likely, will no longer be as favorable as in 2021. On the other hand, such situations have an impact on the Ukrainian market. Our producers have begun to invest not only in plantations, but also in processing, in particular, in freezing capacities. This, of course, is a positive fact, because we export the vast majority of raspberries in frozen form, ”summed up Alexander Yareshchenko.
