Tomatoes have risen in price the most in 2 weeks

Trade, investment

The undisputed leader in price changes over the past 2 weeks has become tomatoes, which have risen in price by 29% and as of February 17, 2022, they can be purchased for an average of 79.82 UAH/kg. The reason for this situation was the rise in the cost of energy and the devaluation of the hryvnia.

This was reported by the Ukrainian Club of Agrarian Business (UCAB) on its Facebook page.

UCAB experts explain that in winter, tomatoes are supplied to supermarkets both from Ukrainian greenhouses and imported from Turkey.

“Prices for tomatoes from Ukrainian producers are rising due to an increase in the cost of production of this vegetable. In recent months, the cost of energy resources needed to heat greenhouses has increased significantly. At the same time, and for the same reason, the price of tomatoes is growing in Turkey, which is the main supplier of vegetables to Ukraine (in winter, greenhouses in Turkey are partially heated). In addition, the price was negatively affected by the partial devaluation of the hryvnia. The combination of these factors led to such an increase in prices for tomatoes,” the report says.

It is mentioned that over the past 2 weeks, beef has risen in price by 7%. Chicken during this time, on the contrary, fell in price by 6%. Bread prices rose by 7%, while milk prices fell by 4%. The price of white cabbage decreased by 4% to UAH 20.65/kg.
