Dry cargo ship with Ukrainian wheat sank in Greek waters

Transport and logistic

Early this morning in the Cretan Sea, northeast of the island of Karabi, the Sea Bird sank after a collision.

Dry cargo ship Sea Bird, sailing under the flag of Togo (Lebanon), followed from Ukraine to Tunisia. There were 7,000 tons of wheat on board.

A large-scale search and rescue operation was launched, all 16 crew members, all Syrian citizens, were rescued.

The vessel sank after the collision, more details are not provided, but judging by the positions of the vessels and the trajectories in the area, the Sea Bird probably collided with the general cargo vessel HAYA.

Reference. “Karavi” is one of the four islets of the Myrtos Sea (Falconer, Velopula Ananes), which, even in calm conditions, have strong sea currents.
