Belarusian authorities ban transit of fertilizers through Lithuanian railway
The ban was introduced in response to the decision of Vilnius to terminate the contract with Belorussky on the transportation of fertilizers via the Lithuanian railway to the port of Klaipeda.
DW writes about it.
It is noted that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country announced the corresponding decision. According to the agency, this is a "forced measure" that was taken in response to "hybrid aggression against Belarus, aimed at causing direct economic damage to the well-being of the Belarusian people." The decision will come into force on February 7 this year.
“A decision has been made to ban the transportation of oil products, chemical and mineral fertilizers transshipped at the stations of the Lithuanian Railways by rail,” the message says.
It is added that on January 12, the Lithuanian government decided to terminate the contract for the transportation of Belarusian potash by Lithuanian railways from February 1. The Cabinet of Ministers confirmed the conclusion of the commission for the study of agreements between strategic companies that the agreement between the Lithuanian Railways and Belorussky is contrary to the interests of Lithuania's national security.
“The agreement with Belorussky was signed in the spring of 2018, it expired at the end of 2023. Under the terms of the agreement, up to 11 million tons of Belarusian fertilizers were annually transported through Lithuania to the port in Klaipeda,” the report says.
It is noted that the transit of potash fertilizers by rail through Lithuania continued, despite the sanctions imposed by the United States against Belorusskaya since December 8. This is explained by the fact that even before the entry into force of the sanctions, Belarus transferred an advance payment to the Lithuanian Railway for several months in advance.
