More than 32 million hectares of Ukrainian lands are losing fertility due to erosion
Arable land in Ukraine occupies 57% of the area of the state, which is more than in all other EU countries. Every year, due to drought and erosion, tens of millions of hectares of land lose fertility.
While activists are holding demonstration actions and blocking the work of industrial enterprises, blaming them for all environmental troubles, the real environmental problem throughout the country is kept silent, - professional ecologists complain. We are talking about a critical situation with the destruction of agricultural soils: every year in Ukraine, almost 500 million tons of arable land suffer from erosion, which has already led to a decrease in soil fertility on an area of more than 32 million hectares.
"Unfortunately, yes. This is really a Ukrainian reality, and not only Ukrainian. Most of all in Ukraine, the southern regions suffer from erosion - we are talking about wind erosion. And the central regions suffer more from water erosion and wind together. Now such degraded lands due to erosion about 13 million hectares, "- Mikhail Amosov, explains the expert on land use.
It is possible to stop this phenomenon, destructive for the soil, only by a very sharp reduction in the scale of destruction and at least by removing all slopes from cultivation. You should also stop swinging in river valleys, experts say. For only in such conditions, the problem with a decrease in fertility can be solved.
Oleksiy Vasilyuk, head of the Ukrainian Environmental Group, states:
“We are the second state in the world in terms of arable land. That is, only Bangladesh is more plowed up than our state. And at this stage, arable land occupies 57% of the country - this is much more in fact than in all other European states taken together, ”the article says.
