Thus, in the statistical yearbook "The World of Organic Agriculture" it is noted that the area of organic agricultural land increased by 2.9 million hectares, and retail sales of organic products increased by 12% in 2020 compared to 2019, as evidenced by the data 190 countries (data as of end 2020). In total, 74.9 million hectares were recorded under organic production.
The largest area of organic farmland is found in Australia (35.7 million ha), followed by Argentina (4.45 million ha) and Uruguay (2.7 million ha). Due to the large area of organic farmland in Australia, half of the world's organic farmland is in Oceania (about 36 million ha). Europe ranks second in terms of area (more than 17 million hectares), followed by Latin America (about 10 million hectares). Compared to 2019, the area of organic land has increased on all continents.
The global organic food market reached €120.6 billion in 2020. The leading markets are the US (€49.5 billion), Germany (€15 billion) and France (€12.7 billion).
In 2020, many major markets continued to show strong growth rates, for example, the German market grew by more than 20%. Danish and Swiss consumers spent more on organic food (€384 and €418 per capita, respectively). Denmark had the highest organic market share with 12.1% of the total food market.
In total, 3.4 million producers of organic products are recorded worldwide. India continues to be the country with the largest number of producers (1.6 million), followed by Ethiopia (about 220 thousand) and Tanzania (over 148 thousand). Most small producers are group certified based on an internal control system.
