McDonald's opens first zero-emission restaurant in Britain
McDonald's plans to achieve zero emissions of 1,400 restaurants and offices by 2030.
McDonald's has opened the first zero-emission restaurant. It was built in Market Drayton, UK.
The pilot project was named "Zero Carbon", according to McDonalds.com.
This restaurant was built with completely recycled and natural materials. Its walls have been insulated with sheep's wool, which might otherwise be sent to landfill, and is a substitute for unstable man-made materials. The wall signs in the establishment were made from used coffee beans.
The restaurant also features a biodiversity garden and nature trail designed by students from Market Drayton Elementary School. The garden will collect rainwater from the car park and provide habitat for frogs and other creatures.
To reduce energy and appliance costs, they used old recycled technology and installed two air tubes with solar panels.
The McDrive driveway in the yard is made of tires and the curbs are made from recycled plastic bottles.
This has helped reduce carbon and carbon dioxide emissions. McDonald's plans to achieve zero emissions of 1,400 restaurants and offices by 2030.
“Food needs to be served in restaurants that will be environmentally friendly in the future. The Drayton Market is a big step towards making this a reality by allowing us to test and put into practice what a zero-emission building actually looks like, both in construction and in use. We've already started rolling out some of these innovations to other restaurants, but Market Drayton is curious that it will serve as a model for our future new buildings, "commented Beth Hart, Vice President of Supply Chain and Brand Trust at McDonald's.
By the way, the polyethylene from McDonald’s began to be reused and made from it bags.
