Volyn scientists have bred a new variety of winter rye "Serpanok", focused on use in the baking industry.

“We have bred a new variety of winter rye “Serpanok”, which has passed variety testing at all variety stations in Ukraine, received a certificate and a patent, which already give us the right to engage in its wide reproduction. If traditionally rye was sown around 20 September - early October, then this variety can be sown even in 20 October,” said Elena Nechiporuk, head of the plant growing and selection laboratory of the Volyn State Agricultural Experimental Station of the Institute of Potato Growing of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

According to her, the Serpanok variety is more fruitful and productive than the previous varieties of winter rye, which was selected by the station. Plant height 120-130 cm, due to which rye is resistant to lodging, and its potential yield is 10-11 t / ha.

As noted, "Serpanok" is resistant to disease. The variety requires the main fertilization with complex nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium fertilizer in autumn and spring feeding on frozen-thawed soil. Such rye is unpretentious and can grow on acidic soils that are unfavorable for wheat. For the Polesie zone, it is one of the irreplaceable grain crops in the crop rotation.

As the deputy director for scientific work of the Volyn State Agricultural Experiment Station Oksana Puznyak added, the Serpanok variety was developed for making bread.
