Celery: a profitable crop for farmers with wild demand in export markets
Plant growing
Despite the warning, growing celery can generate far more profits for farmers than growing potatoes.
“Celery on a plantation with an area of 8 hectares yielded 50 tons of roots per hectare. And retail chains give them a good wholesale price of 20 UAH / kg. You can't help that much for potatoes. Although it is necessary to work hard for the harvest, ”said Leonid Kirichenko, head of the “Zorya Kakhovshchyny” farm.
In his opinion, culture is underestimated in Ukraine and is in too limited demand. However, overseas, celery is in great demand. The only cultivation feature is that the vegetable needs significant irrigation.
“Celery is a hygrophilous culture, so it would develop poorly without irrigation. This year, there were 10 irrigations on the plantation, and in drier years it gave 15-16 irrigations. Yes, and working hands for the sake of the harvest must be applied: the roots are dug by hand, manually cut with knives, they are still washed. After all, 90% of our products are bought by large retail chains, and they have increased requirements for the quality and appearance of products. Therefore, we need to answer her,” said the farmer.
