Frost-resistant varieties of persimmon and kiwi were introduced in Transcarpathia

Gardening

The Marushchak family from Vinogradov (Transcarpathian region) has been growing exotic crops for two generations. Larisa Maruschak started the business, and now her son Alexander is more involved in the garden. In total, gardeners grow about 150 plant species. Bananas, kiwi, persimmon, azimina and other exotic species grow here both indoors and outdoors.

In addition to plant breeding and sales of seedlings, Marushchaks are also engaged in plant breeding. So, for example, frost-resistant varieties of kiwi and persimmons were bred. Now they are experimenting with passion fruit and winter fruit.

“Now the greatest demand is for persimmon and kiwi seedlings. They also began to take an active interest in the azimine. This is a new culture for Ukraine. I plan to breed it for winter hardiness, size and taste of the fruit. As for other crops, in order for the persimmon to survive and grow without problems, it is advisable to plant it on the south side of some building heated in winter. This will provide an additional 1-3 degrees of heat. You can also plant it near a deaf concrete fence. During the first two to three years after planting the seedlings, before wintering, a large pile of leaves should be poured onto the roots, and the bole should be wrapped with agrofibre. This is another plus 2 - 3 additional degrees of heat, because the persimmon will survive,” says Larisa Maruschak.

In addition to gardens, the farm has two greenhouses and a nursery. Works here for 365 days a year, says Alexander. Yes, only watering during the heat is spent three hours a day. The Maruschaks are constantly developing the economy and investing in it.
