Imported potatoes, cheese and chicken: why does Ukrainian McDonald's buy 40% of its products abroad?

Agricultural products

The network of fast food restaurants McDonald's is the largest in Ukraine. AgroPortal.ua decided to find out where McDonald's Ukraine establishments buy raw materials, how much they use local products, and whether there are products that domestic producers cannot supply.

About 50 suppliers, but want more

Over the years of work in Ukraine, the McDonald's restaurant chain has almost doubled the number of purchases of products from Ukrainian manufacturers, and as of January 2022, 60% of McDonald's Ukraine ingredients suppliers are local. These are about 50 enterprises.

The press service of the company claims that they are working on further localization of product suppliers, because this allows them to contribute to the development of Ukrainian enterprises and the economy.

“Becoming our supplier is not easy. But this can be done by every Ukrainian company that is ready to work within the framework of the law and meet strict requirements for product quality and safety. To do this, you need to pass the inspection audits of an independent international audit company,” the press service of McDonald’s Ukraine reports.

Since the opening of the first restaurant in Kiev in 1997, the network has grown to more than a hundred establishments in almost all regional centers. And the restaurant near the Central railway station of Kiev takes the second place in the ranking of the most visited McDonald's establishments around the world

There are many theories, opinions and views regarding McDonald's products. But the facts speak for themselves: in 2016, visitors to McDonald's Ukraine restaurants purchased about 64 million burgers from the main and seasonal menus.

The lack of a quality organization of supply provokes imports

Today, Ukrainian McDonald's restaurants, which are used to prepare main menu dishes, are mainly supplied by large Ukrainian enterprises - leaders in their industry, which can guarantee both high quality products and its uninterrupted supply.

In particular:

  • meat steaks are supplied by OSI Food Solutions (Kazatin, Vinnitsa region);
  • buns - Bimbo QSR (Dnipro);
  • milk mixtures for ice cream and shakes - Belotserkovsky Dairy Plant LLC (Bila Tserkva);
  • croissants and pastries - LLC "Chantil" (village Baryshevka, Kiev region),
  • eggs - Ovostar LLC (Kyiv region);
  • ketchup, pickled cucumbers, mayonnaise, sauces - Chumak JSC (Kherson region);
  • vegetables - LLC "Green Factory" (v. Makarov, Kiev region);
  • direct-pressed juices (except orange) - T.B. Fruit "Galicia" (Prykarpattya).

However, there are products that Ukrainian chain restaurants are forced to import, but not because of the absence of enterprises in the relevant industry, but because they cannot organize the supply of their products in a quality manner.

“Unfortunately, due to the lack of enterprises in Ukraine that can provide the necessary capacities for the uninterrupted supply of the required volume of products for McDonald's, we are forced to supply potatoes, cheese and chicken from Germany, Poland and France. Also, there is no production of orange juice in Ukraine, so it is supplied from the Netherlands,” the press service of the company reports.
