Ukrainian agrarians switch to cultivation of non-traditional crops
Plant growing
More and more Ukrainian farmers are sowing their fields with non-traditional crops, which very few people thought about growing 5-10 years ago. In particular, sesame seeds, peanuts, chufa, artichoke and saffron are gaining popularity.
Writes about this NAAN with reference to the YouTube channel "Ukraine".
“Due to global warming, Ukrainian realities are changing. In order not to risk the harvest and not lose income, farmers are forced to switch to adaptive crops. Now in the Ukrainian steppes you can find fields of sesame, chufa, artichoke, saffron or sorghum,” the article says.
Scientists are developing more and more drought-resistant varieties of crops familiar to Ukrainians, and, despite this, many agricultural producers are beginning to grow non-traditional crops that require less moisture in order to diversify risks and remain profitable.
Sesame, peanut, chufa, chia, quinoa - farmers are looking closely at the niche cultures of Central Asia and America, which feel comfortable in southern Ukraine.
“These species are able to withstand rainless periods or, conversely, with irrigation, form a high yield and ensure maximum economic efficiency,” says Sergei Kokovikhin, deputy director for research at the Institute of Irrigated Agriculture of the NAAS.
